4/24-4/28

Reading: We will be reading a whole class novel next week, I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake This novel integrates with our social studies unit this week as well.
Math: Written Test and 25 Subtraction Fact Test on Wednesday, 100 Subtraction Fact Test on Friday. Math is getting much more challenging as the year progresses. Some things to work on at home: counting money (with quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies), as well as telling time to the minute on an analog clock, subtraction facts.
Social Studies: Ch. 10 How did one community change
Writing: Poetry

Important News and Information:
-On Monday, we are going on our field trip to the Botanical Gardens. Remember to send your child with a packed, peanut free lunch, and water to drink. They can bring a reusable water bottle, or a plastic one that can be recycled there. Whatever you prefer. Also, remember to send your child to school wearing their red Zion t-shirts, jeans or uniform bottoms, and comfy walking shoes.
-The musical for grades 1-3 is this Friday, 5/5! Our dress rehearsal is at 2pm in the church sanctuary, and our performance is at 6pm. Please have your child meet in the church basement at 5:45pm. The kids need to wear khaki bottoms. They will be given a purple t-shirt at the performance to wear over their shirts.
-The last day to take AR tests is on Tuesday, May 23rd. Please encourage your child to keep reading!



In honor of Earth Day, we reviewed the importance of the three R's and brainstormed ways that we can Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. 



We also learned about the Lifecycle of an aluminum can. Did you know that the time it takes for a can to be recycled and put back on the shelf is only 60 days?!

In math, we learned about perimeter. To practice this skill, the kids worked together to figure out the perimeter of our playground. 






Silent Reading Time

We learned about soil today. The kids were able to observe three different types of soil. 





We played a game in phonics to practice spelling plural nouns.

In art, we learned about Vincent Van Gogh and painted sunflowers inspired by his artwork.

Looking Ahead to Next Week:

Phonics/Grammar: Review of Plural Endings of words
Reading: Poetry focusing on similes and metaphors
Math: Written Test and 25 fact test on Tuesday (so no homework on Tuesday)
Science: Ch. 6 Lesson 2 Soil. We are learning about soil in preparation for our field trip to the Botanical Gardens. A study guide will be sent home on Monday and our science test will be on Thursday.

Important News and Information:
-Information about our upcoming field trip to the Botanical Gardens was sent home in Friday folders. The field trip will take place on Monday, May 1st. Kids will need to bring a peanut free packed lunch, water to drink, and wear their Zion t-shirts and comfy walking shoes. Please return the permission slip by next Friday (4/28).
-Next Week is Week of the Young Child. Students may wear jean or regular dress bottoms along with each dress day.

Math: 80 Subtraction Fact Test on Friday
Social Studies: Chapter 9, How do Communities Change?
Writing: Poetry
After learning a way to take notes of what we read, the students had the chance to try it for themselves using our science chapter about electricity


In math, we learned how to estimate the sum of numbers

We also learned how to measure using feet and inches. Students took turns measuring each other's height. 


Mr. Smith, who works for Amaren, took us on a trip around Zion to see how our school gets its electricity



He taught us about the importance of electrical safety




































Important News and Information:
-Easter Break is from Friday 4/14-Monday 4/17. School will resume on Tuesday, 4/18. There are several church services at Zion this weekend to celebrate Christ's victory over sin, death, and the devil. I pray that your family may find time to worship our Savior this joyful Easter weekend!
-Bobcat Spirit Day is Friday, April 21st. Students may wear a Zion t-shirt and regular dress bottoms to celebrate!
-The Week of the Young Child: April 24-28, 2017
If students in Kindergarten through Second Grade
 decide not to participate,
he or she should wear the regular standardized dress.

-Zion's Spring Musical is coming up--- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders will be performing "A Technicolor Promise" on Friday, May 5th at 6pm in the Zion sanctuary. Please let me know as soon as possible if your child will not be able to attend.  Dress for the evening's performance will be khaki bottoms and a t-shirt of their choice, please no collared shirts. The kids will be receiving a purple t-shirt on the night of the performance, which is to be worn over their own t-shirts.

If your child is participating in painting the set, 
please have them MEET UNDER THE PAVILION in the parking lot after school, 
please send PAINT CLOTHES to change into, 
and PICK THEM UP AT 4:00 pm in the church basement.  

Dress for the night of the performance will be khaki bottoms (pants, shorts, or skirt).
Please have your child wear a t-shirt that night as we will give them a shirt to wear that night.

The kids made musical instruments on Friday as a STEM activity to demonstrate their learning of sound

Kelly McCoy from 1st Community Credit Union came to visit. She taught us about trade, money, and the importance of saving.

Grammar/Phonics: Open and Closed Syllables, Articles A and An
Reading: We will begin our unit about poetry. Each week we will be learning about different elements of poetry, as well as writing different styles of poems. This week we will be introduced to poetry, and will talk about imagery in poetry.
Math: We will have a 25 fact test and a written test on Thursday. There will not be homework on Thursday for the long weekend.
Science: Electricity. A study guide for the chapter 12 test will go home on Monday. We will have the test on Thursday.

Important News and Information:

-Please make sure you are filling out the church attendance logs in the front of your child's homework folder!
-Easter Break will begin this Friday- We will not have school on Good Friday (4/14) through Easter Monday (4/17). I hope you enjoy the break and take some time to worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his victory over sin, death, and the devil. He is Risen! Alleluia!
