Important News and Information:

-The Thanksgiving Food Drive is quickly approaching. The food drive will take place on Wed. Nov. 15th. Instead of bringing a normal monetary chapel offering, the school is asked to donate various foods to be donated to Seminary families. 2nd grade is asked to donate Stuffing and boxed potatoes (mashed, sweet, slices, etc.)

-Noon Dismissal is coming up on Wed., Nov. 8th.

-Muffins for Moms is also coming up on Wed., Nov. 8th.

-World Sport Stacking Day will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017.  On this day people all over the world will be spending at least 30 minutes stacking cups in an effort to once again set a Guinness World Record for the “Most People Sport Stacking in Multiple Locations on one Day”.  Zion has participated in this activity for the past 10 years and we’ve always helped set a new record. This year’s goal is 640,000 stackers. We will have about 250 kids and a few adults adding to that total number.

Wednesday: Calling Drew’s Avengers! - Wear a Super Hero Shirt and jeans                                     This year we are collecting Chapel offerings to support Friends of Kids with Cancer.  On Wednesday, October 25 we will be having a special offering collection of super hero items to honor Drew Albrittons' 8th birthday.  Drew was a preschooler here at Zion who bravely fought cancer and now is with the biggest superhero of all, Jesus!  Please bring your superhero items to chapel on Wednesday October 25. Action figures, costumes, toys, movies, backpacks, Lego sets, video games, shirts, or any items with a super hero theme are all welcome. Thursday: Lumberjack day, Chop drugs out of your life. Wear a flannel shirt. Friday: Red Day, In Christ I Stand, against drugs. Spirit shirt and jeans. Looking for Horizontal, Vertical, and Oblique lines around our classroom Playing a syllable game Syllable game Working with a group to brainstorm ways to solve erosion problems Our class practiced our reader's theater skit, "The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything" all week. Important News and Information:
-Our class took the STAR test this past week, information on their new reading zones is in their homework folder today. 

-Our field trip to the St. Louis Art Museum is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27th. Students are to wear a red Zion t-shirt and regular uniform dress bottoms. We will eat lunch in our classroom when we return, so please pack a peanut free lunch for your child. The permission slip needs to be signed and returned to school by Monday, Oct. 23rd. 

-Today was the end of 1st quarter. Next Thursday is Parent Teacher conferences, so no school for the students. If you haven't done so yet, please sign up for a 15 minute conference time using Sycamore. 

-No School on Friday, Oct. 20th

-This week in Faith Family Prayer time we learned about the give Him 5 program.  We are challenged to spend 5 minutes a day praying to Jesus.  We use the word FAITH to help lead our time.

To introduce this idea to the class, I asked them the question, "what is strong enough to break a rock?" After our discussion, we went outside and the kids attempted to see if they were strong enough to break rocks.  In phonics, we learned and practiced syllables in words Observing a rock during a science experiment. We tested if water was strong enough to change a rock...it was! An erosion problem on our playground. How can we fix it?? On Friday, we got together with Mrs. Stanglein's preschool class to do a rescue mission. The goal was to rescue Rapunzel from her tower and get her safely to the ground. The 2nd graders and preschoolers did a great job of working together!  Also on Friday, Mrs. Brockmeyer came to visit our classroom to teacher our class about "Rock my Way." This is an awesome program that can bring so much joy to people all over the world. The kids each got to paint a rock that they will be able to take home and use to spread some joy:)

-Please make sure the church and Sunday school attendance sheets have been completed for 1st quarter. I will be recording this on Monday for 1st quarter report cards and want to make sure it's accurate.
-I put an updated sheet of your child's AR quizzes in their folders today. Reminder that the final day to take AR tests for 1st quarter is Thursday, Oct. 12
-Calling Drew’s Avengers! 

Our offerings this year are going to Friends of Kids with Cancer.  

On Wednesday, October 25 we will be having a special offering.

-A note from Mrs. Crumrine....We are excited to be participating in the Picture the Music contest with the St. Louis Symphony again this year.  This is a collaborative music/art project put on by the Symphony Volunteer Organization.  Each year a different piece of music is chosen for the students to listen to—this year it is the Olympic Fanfare from the 1984 Olympics by John Williams.  The children then draw/color/paint/etc. whatever they hear in the music and we may choose up to 7 pieces of artwork from Zion to submit to the contest.  Students from all over the metro area participate and there is an awards ceremony in March for the finalists.  The students may bring their artwork home to finish it;  they may paint, use markers, decoupage (flat, not 3D), glitter, crayons, etc.  Please have them return their pictures to school before Christmas break so that we may choose our submissions before the January deadline.  If you have an questions, please email Mrs. Crumrine at kcrumrine@zionharvester.org.  

-Grades for Social Studies and Science will be based on a semester model, as opposed to quarterly for the 1st-3rd-grade department. Grades in these subjects that are earned during first quarter will be moved into the second quarter tab in Sycamore before report cards are issued. This will allow you to view your child's progress as the quarter develops in a particular subject yet, it will offer students more time to absorb and hopefully master the material in both content areas.

Working on their writing. This week the kids were finishing up their informational writing from last week. They wrote to inform the class about a book.

In math, we began to talk about dimes and pennies. The kids practiced counting lots of dimes and pennies!

In Art, we learned about the primary colors, and how the primary colors are used to make the secondary colors. The kids practiced mixing their primary colors to make all of the colors on a color wheel. On Friday, they drew pumpkins and painted them using their knowledge of the color wheel.
